Keith Urban and Jimmy Fallon Reveal Hilarious Prank They Played on Nicole Kidman at the Met Gala

Keith Urban won’t let Nicole Kidman forget her past flame.
Indeed, the country singer recently reminisced on a prank he and Jimmy Fallon—with whom the Big Little Lies star infamously revealed she had one bad date several years ago—played on Nicole at the 2024 Met Gala.
“I was sitting next to Nic,” Keith recalled during a Sept. 25 appearance on The Tonight Show. “She had her hand on mine and she was talking to somebody, and Jimmy came over to talk to me and I said, ‘Jump in the seat, Jimmy and slide your hand under mine so she’s holding your hand.’ She won’t know. She’s chatting to somebody looking the other way.”
And the Grammy winner—who shares daughters Sunday, 16, and Faith, 13, with Nicole—reenacted the situation with Jimmy and his hands on the late night show’s desk, showing off how oblivious Nicole had been to their switcheroo.
“And then I went around the other side of the table,” Keith laughed, and mimicked his wave. “And was like, ‘Hi babe.’”
Jimmy roared with laughter adding, “She was like ‘What’s going on?’ She was like, ‘Jimmy don’t do that!’”
Of course, the prank is much funnier when one recalls Jimmy—who now shares daughters Winnie, 11, and Frances, 9 with wife Nancy—and Nicole’s extremely awkward date back when they were both single in the mid-aughts.
"I was on Saturday Night Live or something,” Nicole recalled of the somewhat blind date in 2015. “I don't really remember what it was. I just remember I really liked you. Our mutual friend was like, ‘Jimmy really wants to meet you. You can go over to his apartment.’ I'm single and I'm like, ‘OK!’”
Jimmy—who had described the could’ve-been couple’s meeting as more of a networking hang out—was naturally surprised by Nicole’s perspective.
“Wait what?!!” he replied to The Perfect Couple star. “What are you talking about? Did I date Nicole Kidman?”
Based on her recounting of the “date,” it wasn’t exactly love at first sight for Nicole, who ultimately wed Keith in 2006.
“I go over and you're there in a baseball cap and, like—nothing,” the Oscar winner—who also shares Bella, 31, and Connor, 29, with ex Tom Cruise—joked. “You wouldn't talk. You didn't say anything. You were like, ‘Hey, mmm, mmm, mmm!'’ So, I left, and went, 'OK, no chemistry.' And then I was like, 'Maybe he's gay!’”
And while Jimmy was visibly horrified and shocked to have blown his shot with Nicole, he emphasized that it simply wasn’t meant to be.
“You made a much better decision,” he noted. “Keith Urban is so much cooler than I am."
Indeed, Nicole has found her happily ever after with Keith. Keep reading for all the sweet moments between the pair.
